What are Pattern Life Schools?

Pattern Life Schools are the result of an attempt to follow the counsel of the Lord with respect to education. They are modeled on principles and directives from the Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White. Some of these directives will be identified in future postings. An example of such an educational imperative is found in Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, page 211, "Several hours each day should be devoted to working with the students in some line of manual training. In no case should this be neglected." If you think carefully about this instruction, you notice that it doesn't allow for a personal interpretation of the value of manual training. It simply identifies a key attribute of a successful educational program, that is, that manual training will contribute a minimum of several hours per day to the class schedule. So, we plan several hours each day into our class schedule for manual training. And that's how we want to arrange everything in the school curricula and calendar - read and do, read and do, read and do.

Another key attribute of a Pattern Life School is its support of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Each member of the Pattern Life Operating Committee is a Seventh-day Adventist Church member who happily returns 10% or more of his or her income to the Church. Most Pattern Life Schools are located adjacent to an established Seventh-day Adventist church. Our school children participate in their local churches. Should we receive a directive from the SDA church that conflicts with the Lord's counsel, we want to obey the Lord's counsel, but that hasn't happened, and we don't think it will.

Additionally, Pattern Life Schools are happy places. While it is important that we obey every Inspired injunction down to the smallest hint, nevertheless, we avoid nit-picking. If someone is doing things different from us, we want to err on the side of the other individual. For example, I don't eat cheese because I am aware of counsel like this, "Cheese should never be introduced into the stomach." 2T 68, but if someone chooses to eat cheese, I do not want to think about their cheese. Instead I want to listen carefully to them, care about them, and see if I can be of some assistance. In short, Love always wins. Of course Love and the Divine Way are at peace with one-another, so if a policy appears to conflict with kindness, generosity, and mercy, we will look very closely at the policy to make sure it is indeed in harmony with the Inspired counsel.

The final attribute I'd like to mention in this posting is Pattern Life's posture with respect to sharing. We exist to follow the Divine Pattern and also to provide a pattern for others to follow. We do not suppose that our schools are perfect, so we do not provide the ultimate Pattern - only Jesus can do that. But we are very happy to share with anyone and everyone what we are doing, and to help you set up your own pattern school. Would you like a Pattern Life School by you? We'll be glad to help. Come see what we are doing. Copy what we are doing, or better yet, go to the Inspired sources and improve on what we are doing and share with us so we can grow too.

There are currently three Pattern Life schools. Pattern Life Elementary School Number 1 is in Nagaland, India. Pattern Life Elementary School Number 2 is in Manipur, India. Pattern Life Christian School will open, Lord willing, in Benton, Tennessee March 1, 2007.
